What is a single-gun DC fast charging station, and what are its main features and target customers?

A single-gun DC fast charging station is an independent direct-current charging device equipped with only one charging gun, designed to rapidly recharge electric vehicles. Unlike AC chargers which rely on the vehicle’s on-board charger to convert alternating current to direct current, DC fast chargers complete power conversion inside the charging station. Grid AC power is transformed and rectified into high-voltage DC power before being delivered directly to the vehicle power battery, which greatly shortens charging time. Typical power ratings of single-gun DC fast chargers range from 30kW to 180kW. Most mainstream models can charge an EV from 20% to 80% within 20–40 minutes, depending on the vehicle battery capacity and battery temperature. Since it has only one charging outlet, the station can serve one electric car at a time. This design brings many practical strengths. The whole unit occupies a small floor area, requires simpler civil construction and lower installation investment compared with multi-gun DC charging cabinets. It also has fewer internal power modules, so the failure risk is relatively reduced, and troubleshooting and maintenance become easier. Single-gun DC fast charging stations are widely adopted in many scenarios.
They are ideal for highway service stations, roadside public parking lots, commercial plazas, gas stations, fleet depots for taxis and logistics vans, and remote branch charging sites where vehicle flow is not extremely high. For charging operators, single-gun DC piles offer flexible deployment. Operators can add charging capacity gradually by installing separate single units one by one instead of investing heavily in large multi-gun cabinets at the beginning. This lowers capital pressure and matches real local charging demand. Besides charging speed, modern single-gun DC stations support multiple smart functions: real-time meter reading, 4G/Wi-Fi communication, QR code scanning payment, remote monitoring, overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, leakage and over-temperature protection.
Once abnormal conditions occur, the system cuts off power instantly to prevent safety hazards. It is a cost-effective and reliable charging solution for small and medium-scale charging projects.
